THE MAGA SIGNAL
Virginia's Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin was handed a stunning defeat in Tuesday's General Assembly elections, with Democrats flipping the House of Delegates and retaining the state Senate. While Republican donors have been urging Youngkin to make a late entry into the 2024 presidential race, the first-term governor said he had to gain control of the General Assembly first - vowing to push through a 15-week abortion ban. Virginia's voters rejected that, with Democrats estimated to win at least 21 state Senate seats, retaining their majority, and 51 seats in the House of Delegates, gaining control from Republicans.
U.S. President Joe Biden's popularity slipped this month to its lowest level since April, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed, the latest data point raising concerns about the Democrat's re-election bid next year. The two-day opinion poll, which ended on Saturday, showed 39% of respondents approved of Biden's performance as president, matching April's reading and down marginally from 40% in October and 42% in September. The poll had a margin of error of about three percentage points.

The House passed a GOP-led resolution on Tuesday to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib over comments critical of Israel and in support of Palestinians amid Israel’s war against Hamas. The move amounts to a rare and significant rebuke of the Michigan Democrat, who is the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress. The vote was 234 to 188 with four Republicans voting against and 22 Democrats voting in support of the censure resolution. The resolution, which was introduced by Georgia GOP Rep. Rich McCormick, advanced earlier in the day after a Democratic-led effort to block the measure failed. Tlaib has defended herself against the censure attempts, arguing that they are an effort to silence her and saying that her “colleagues have resorted to distorting my positions in resolutions filled with obvious lies.”
Ohioans voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution Tuesday, another sweeping repudiation of efforts to curb reproductive rights in a contest that was the most closely watched referendum in the country this year. The decisive win in a Republican-controlled state that voted twice for Donald Trump is likely to boost Democrats’ hopes that protections will be established in other states during next year’s presidential election, as well as provide fuel for their candidates going forward. Preliminary exit polls conducted by The Washington Post suggest that the passage of the amendment was driven by strong turnout among Democratic-leaning groups and swing groups, with women overwhelmingly favoring the measure, while men backed it by a smaller margin. The majority of Black and Latino voters supported the measure, although White voters — the majority of the electorate — were more evenly divided.
Ron DeSantis’s biggest donor is considering switching his support to Donald Trump, in a sharp rebuke of the Florida governor’s White House aspirations. Robert Bigelow, a Nevada real estate investor who has funded space exploration and research into paranormal activities, gave more than $20mn to the DeSantis campaign earlier this year, the largest donation to any 2024 candidate, according to the latest federal filings. But Bigelow criticised DeSantis for running a weak campaign — and said Hamas’s attack on Israel last month showed the US needed a “streetwise” leader such as Trump.
